Can you recommend a NSF 61-certified coating system for the interior of a new, 50,000-gallon steel tank used for potable water storage?
Sherwin-Williams Macropoxy 646 NSF Fast Cure Epoxy is a high-solids, high-build, fast-drying, polyamide epoxy certified to NSF Standard 61 as a tank lining for potable water storage tanks. This product is suitable for application at temperatures as low as 40 degrees F. The high solids content and high-build properties ensure adequate protection of edges, corners, and welds.
Proper surface preparation is key to a lasting system. The steel should be Solvent Cleaned per SSPC-SP1 to remove all surface contaminants. Next, blast clean the surface per SSPC-SP 10 Near White Metal Blast Cleaning. Blast clean all steel surfaces using sharp angular abrasive to provide a surface profile of 2-3 mils. The steel should be coated the same day as blast cleaned to prevent flash rusting.
Two coats of Macropoxy 646 NSF Fast Cure at 5-10 mils per coat are recommended for protection of the tank interior.

Plant management at the facility I service would like a coating recommendation for the exterior of a new steel tank. We would like a single coat of paint that would provide corrosion protection as well as long-lasting color and gloss retention. What do you suggest?
Sherwin-Williams FastClad DTM Urethane will provide the corrosion protection and excellent color and gloss retention you require. FastClad DTM Urethane is applied at 6-9 mils dft, it will provide performance equal to a two-coat epoxy and urethane coating system.
Proper surface preparation will extend the service life of the coating. Recommended surface reparation for the tank exterior is SSPC-SP1 Solvent Cleaning followed by SSPC-SP 6 Commercial Blast Cleaning. Blast clean all steel surfaces using a sharp angular abrasive to provide a 2-mil surface profile. The blast-cleaned steel should be coated the same day to prevent flash rusting.

The management at our county wastewater treatment plant would like a coating recommendation for the masonry walls of a new lab. Since work will be ongoing in other areas of the facility, they would like a low-odor coating that can withstand frequent washing. What do you suggest?
Sherwin-Williams Waterbased Tile-Clad is a two-component high-performance epoxy formulated for low-odor application as well as washability and chemical resistance. Waterbased Tile-Clad can be applied as a self-priming product to smooth masonry surfaces.
After curing for a minimum of 28 days at 75 degrees F, the masonry should be cleaned in accordance with SSPC-SP13 / NACE 6. After proper surface preparation, Waterbased Tile-Clad can be applied at 2-4 mils dft by brush, roller or spray application. Two coats are recommended for best performance.
